SEX DIFFERENCES IN 5-HT TRANSMISSION AND
BEHAVIOUR
Few
studies have examined the relationship between genetics, stress and sex-related
differences in neurotransmitters systems. Michelle Jones and Irwin Lucki (Sex Differences in the Regulation of Serotonergic Transmission and
Behavior in 5-HT Receptor Knock-out Mice. Neuropsychopharmacology 30, 1039-1047,
2005) conducted such a work in mice and concluded that female
5-HT1B receptor knock-out mice demonstrate a sex-linked disinhibition
of 5-HT release that sustained higher baseline levels of hippocampal 5-HT and
behavioural vulnerability to 5-HT depletion.
